SpaceX Interview Questions & Process

Application Software Engineer, Flight Software Engineer, Starlink/Network Software Engineer, and Embedded Software Engineer

Updated July 2026

SpaceX hires software engineers for flight and avionics software, Starlink, ground systems, manufacturing, and simulation, and runs one of the most intense loops in the industry — five to eight rounds over four to six weeks, with an acceptance rate under 1%. Interviewers don't ask trivia; they ask problems that test whether you can reason from first principles under pressure, and the language and constraints depend on the team.

Avionics and embedded flight-software interviews are deeply C++ focused, with embedded realities front and centre — limited memory, deterministic execution, no dynamic allocation in hot paths, and questions on mutexes, semaphores, and manual memory management. Starlink and ground systems lean Python, Go, or Rust. The onsite typically runs coding rounds, a systems/architecture round, a dedicated debugging round, a behavioural with the hiring manager, and sometimes a cross-functional panel.

The cost of walking in unprepared

SpaceX's process runs 6 stages. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.

Merra: run the SpaceX interview before it counts

Hope, Merra’s AI interviewer, runs a SpaceX-style mock out loud — the same question styles, real follow-ups — then scores you on the five dimensions real interviewers use, with a recording and transcript.

The SpaceX interview process

  1. 1Apply to a specific avionics. Apply to a specific avionics, Starlink, ground-systems, or simulation team.
  2. 2Recruiter screen (~30 minutes). background, motivation, and logistics.
  3. 3Technical phone screen (45–60 minutes). one or two
  4. 4Some teams add a timed coding assessment or a seco. Some teams add a timed coding assessment or a second live coding round.
  5. 5Onsite, four to six rounds. two coding rounds, a systems/architecture round, a debugging round, a behavioural with the hiring manager, and sometimes a cross-functional panel.
  6. 6Debrief and decision. Debrief and decision; the full process runs five to eight rounds over four to six weeks.

As reported by recent candidates. The same styles Hope asks in a SpaceX-style mock.

Implement a fixed-size ring buffer with no dynamic allocation in the hot path.
SWE — C++
Explain how you'd synchronise two tasks with a mutex and avoid priority inversion.
Embedded
Here's a C++ program that crashes intermittently — find and fix the fault.
SWE — Debugging
Design the software architecture for a fault-tolerant avionics control loop.
Systems
Solve a medium-hard graph problem and reason about worst-case behaviour.
SWE — Algorithms
Tell me about the hardest engineering problem you've solved under time pressure.

SpaceX interview FAQs

Does SpaceX use HireVue?

SpaceX's loop is live — recruiter, technical phone screens, and an intense onsite; its process doesn't describe a universal recorded-video HireVue stage.

How many rounds are there?

Five to eight over four to six weeks: a recruiter screen, a technical phone screen, sometimes an assessment, and a four-to-six-round onsite.

How hard is it?

Very hard — under 1% of applicants get an offer. Avionics roles demand real embedded C++; all roles reward first-principles reasoning under pressure.

How long does it take?

Commonly four to six weeks, though the bar and scheduling can extend it.
