Anthropic Interview Questions & Process

Software Engineer, Research Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, and ML Systems Engineer

Updated July 2026

Anthropic hires software engineers across product, model-serving and inference, research infrastructure, and safety systems, and runs a practical, mission-driven loop. The technical rounds favour multi-step, build-then-extend implementation problems over memorised algorithm patterns — clean, adaptable code under changing requirements is what's actually scored — and there's a substantive values round on AI ethics, risk, and responsible deployment.

The process runs four to six stages over three to six weeks: a recruiter screen, one or two technical screens (live coding or a take-home, 45–90 minutes), a system-design round, values and mission-alignment conversations, and a final team-match or hiring-committee step. One firm rule: Anthropic prohibits AI-tool use in all live interviews and has published explicit candidate guidance — candidates have been removed for using AI assistance, so plan to code unaided.

The cost of walking in unprepared

Anthropic's process runs 6 stages. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.

Anthropic interview FAQs

Does Anthropic use HireVue?

Anthropic's screens are live coding or take-home assessments, not a recorded-video HireVue round — and it explicitly prohibits AI-tool use during live interviews.

How many rounds are there?

Four to six — a recruiter screen, one or two technical screens, a system-design round, values conversations, and a final team match / hiring committee.

How hard is it?

Medium–hard but practical: build-then-extend problems reward clean, adaptable code over memorised patterns, and the values round on AI safety is a real evaluation.

How long does it take?

Usually three to six weeks, including team matching.
