AMD Interview Questions & Process
GPU Software Engineer, Firmware/Embedded Engineer, C++ Systems Engineer, and AI/ROCm Software Engineer
Updated July 2026AMD hires software engineers around CPUs, GPUs, accelerators, drivers, firmware, compilers, runtimes, validation, and AI frameworks, and its loop is fundamentals-heavy and highly team-dependent — some candidates get lighter, conversational rounds, others a deep dive into C/C++, Verilog, and the hardware-software boundary. AMD cares less about flashy algorithms than whether you can reason cleanly from first principles and defend the details of real work.
Expect a recruiter call, a technical round, a hiring-manager conversation, and an onsite. Coding leans on C/C++ and data structures (linked lists, arrays, stacks, queues) plus topics like bit manipulation, matrix operations, and binary parsing — often with a follow-up on how your solution interacts with CPU or GPU cache. System design here means hardware-software interfaces (for example, GPU context switching, state management, command buffers, and priority scheduling), not web-scale distributed systems.
The cost of walking in unprepared
AMD's process runs 6 stages. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.
Merra: run the AMD interview before it counts
Hope, Merra’s AI interviewer, runs a AMD-style mock out loud — the same question styles, real follow-ups — then scores you on the five dimensions real interviewers use, with a recording and transcript.

AMD interview FAQs
Does AMD use HireVue?
AMD's official careers page doesn't name HireVue or a universal recorded-video assessment, and it warns that legitimate recruiting is never conducted only over text or chat apps.
How many rounds are there?
Usually two to five — recruiter, technical, hiring manager, and an onsite — and it's notably team-dependent.
How hard is it?
Fundamentals-hard: strong C/C++, computer architecture, and debugging, with system design on hardware-software interfaces rather than web scale. First-principles reasoning is rewarded.
How long does it take?
A few days to a few weeks, depending on team and scheduling.
