McKinsey Interview Questions & Process

Strategy Consulting · Case Interviews

Updated July 2026

McKinsey & Company advises corporations, governments and nonprofits on strategic and operational problems, and it selects for exceptional analytical ability, evidence of personal leadership and a record of high achievement. The process is short but unusually demanding: a structured resume screen, the Solve digital assessment, then two rounds of live interviews.

Solve is a set of simulation games rather than a business-theory test, and its modules have changed over time, so check what your own invitation contains. As of the 2026 cycle the common form is a roughly 65-minute two-module version built around a data-interpretation study and a scenario game, with a longer variant of about 85 minutes adding a behavioural judgment module. Results are read alongside your resume, so both need to be strong to reach interviews.

The live rounds are what McKinsey is known for. Each interview pairs a Personal Experience Interview with an interviewer-led case, typically two or three sessions with Engagement Managers in the first round and more demanding cases with Associate Partners or Partners in the second. The PEI probes leadership, achievement, entrepreneurial drive and personal impact, and it rewards candidates who say "I" and give specifics rather than hiding inside "we".

The case format matters too. McKinsey's cases are interviewer-led, so the interviewer controls the sequence and breaks the problem into discrete tasks such as structuring, chart analysis and mental maths. Answers should be top-down and concise. Strong candidates commonly prepare for two to three months.

The cost of walking in unprepared

McKinsey's process spans 4 distinct stages, often compressed into a single high-pressure loop. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.

The McKinsey interview process

  1. 1Structured Resume Screen. Rigorous review of academic achievement, high-impact extracurricular work, and quantifiable leadership evidence.
  2. 2McKinsey Solve Digital Assessment. Interactive simulation games rather than a business-theory test. The common 2026 form is a roughly 65-minute two-module version (a data-interpretation study plus a scenario game), with a longer ~85-minute variant adding a behavioural judgment module.
  3. 3First-Round Interviews. Usually two or three sessions led by Engagement Managers. Each combines roughly 10 minutes of Personal Experience Interview (PEI) with a 30-to-45-minute interviewer-led case.
  4. 4Second-Round Interviews. Final interviews led by Associate Partners or senior Partners, with more demanding business cases and deeper PEI probing.

McKinsey interview FAQs

How should candidates structure a McKinsey Personal Experience Interview story?

The PEI tests leadership, achievement, entrepreneurial drive, and personal impact. Use a detailed STAR structure and emphasize your individual actions using "I" rather than hiding behind "we."

How is McKinsey's interviewer-led case different from other firms' formats?

The interviewer controls the sequence and breaks the case into discrete tasks such as chart analysis, mental math, and initial structuring. Answers should be concise, top-down, and focused on the result.

How long should candidates prepare for McKinsey interviews?

Strong candidates often spend two to three months building business-math fluency, MECE structuring, and live case-interview experience with peers or coaches.
