IBM Interview Questions & Process

Software Engineer, Java/Cloud Developer, Data Scientist, and Technical Consultant

Updated July 2026

IBM hires software, cloud, data, security, and consulting talent, and runs one of the more assessment-heavy funnels among large employers. Its official process moves from application through expert screening, role-dependent assessments, interviews or an assessment centre, and a final decision — and IBM is explicit that the exact path varies by role, level, and region.

For software roles the sequence is usually: an online cognitive assessment (quantitative aptitude, number series, and English, often around 70 questions in ~100 minutes), a HackerRank coding test of one to two array/string/algorithm problems, and a signature IBM step — the recorded competency interview, an AI-led video round with no live interviewer where you answer roughly five pre-recorded behavioural questions on the clock. Live technical interviews with a senior engineer or manager then cover coding, CS fundamentals, and project depth, with substantial variation by team.

The cost of walking in unprepared

IBM's process runs 6 stages. The coding is moderate, but the assessment-heavy funnel and the recorded behavioural round catch people out — prepare CS fundamentals and concise STAR answers you can deliver to camera.

IBM interview FAQs

Does IBM use HireVue?

IBM's official page confirms some candidates complete a webcam-and-microphone video assessment but doesn't name the vendor. In practice this is IBM's AI-led "recorded competency interview" — treat the invitation email as the authoritative platform instruction.

How many rounds are there?

No universal count. Software candidates typically see assessments plus one or two live interviews, but IBM officially says format and number vary by role and region.

How hard is it?

The coding is moderate, but the assessment-heavy funnel and the recorded behavioural round catch people out — prepare CS fundamentals and concise STAR answers you can deliver to camera.

How long does it take?

Around three to five weeks on average (candidate reports cluster near ~25 days), varying by team and region.
