Oxford Geography interview: 'unpredictable questions', and the one Oxford publishes
Three in four applicants are interviewed, there's no test and no essay, and tutors say the interview 'is not a test of knowledge' but of how you respond to unpredictable questions.
Updated September 2026Oxford Geography interviews about 75% of applicants and admits about 22%, with an intake of 76 (three-year average, 2023-25). There is no admissions test and no written work, so beyond your academic record the interview carries the selection. Oxford says applicants need a strong academic record and that at interview tutors look for the ability to deploy your knowledge in ways that show initiative and an awareness of the world around you; interviews 'are not a test of knowledge but give applicants the opportunity to respond in a thoughtful way to unpredictable questions and ideas'. The one published geography question, 'if I were to visit the area where you live, what would I be interested in?', is chosen deliberately so that widely travelled applicants have no advantage. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed online in December, usually by two tutors, often more than once and sometimes by a second college. Oxford calls it 'a short tutorial with someone who knows the subject well'.
