Newcastle University medicine interview: MMI on campus, panel for international
Home applicants get an MMI, international applicants a two-interviewer panel, and both are asked comparable questions. Your SJT band counts as one extra station.
Updated September 2026Newcastle University publishes its full MBBS admissions policy each year, so the interview stage is unusually transparent. For 2027 entry, home A100 and A101 applicants generally take a Multiple Mini Interview on campus, while international applicants generally have a panel interview with two interviewers, on campus or remotely; the policy says both formats ask a comparable set of questions. Selectors do not see your personal statement or reference. In the MMI, each station is scored by an individual selector and the categories are assessed through role play and interview questions; the panel uses interview questions only, scored separately by each selector. Your UCAT situational judgement band is added to the interview score with the weight of one station (band 1 = 5, band 2 = 3, band 3 = 1; band 4 applicants are not considered). The final ranking is 50% academic screen and 50% interview. Interviews run from December to February, photo ID is checked, and professionalism is monitored throughout the day.

- 1Stage one, the academic screen: for home A100, GCSE best eight (up to 40 points) plus A level best three (up to 40) plus UCAT on a sliding scale (up to 60 points, from 1810 and below to 2400 and above). SJT band 4 applicants are not considered. International and A101 applicants are ranked on UCAT alone.
- 2Interviews run from December to February. Bring photo ID; you must be fit and well to attend, and professionalism is monitored throughout.
- 3Home A100 and A101 applicants: generally a Multiple Mini Interview on campus. Categories are assessed through role play and interview questions, and each station is scored by an individual selector. Newcastle's 2026 policy described seven stations of seven minutes with a two-minute ice-breaker in the first and one role-play station; check your 2027 invitation for the exact structure.

- 6Final score = academic screen 50% + interview 50%, ranked. Decisions follow UCAS deadlines; the typical offer is AAA (ABB contextual). Unsuccessful applicants can request feedback at the end of the cycle.
Interview questions
Newcastle publishes its structure and scoring but not its questions. The practice questions below are Merra's, written to a values-based MMI that also uses a panel format; they are not Newcastle's own.
“Selectors haven't seen your personal statement. So tell me, from scratch, what made you choose medicine and what you've done to check it's right for you.”
“Why Newcastle? What do you know about the course beyond the ranking?”
“Explain to a patient who's just been told they have high blood pressure what that means and why it matters even though they feel fine.”
“A patient keeps nodding but you can tell they haven't understood. What do you do?”
“A patient's relative stops you in a corridor and demands to know why their mother hasn't been seen. What would you say to them, word for word?”
“Tell me about a time you got something wrong with another person's feelings. What did you learn?”
