Hull York Medical School interview: every station and how it's scored out of 90
Scored out of 90 and published station by station: a group exercise worth 22, three question stations worth 17 each, and a video scenario worth 17. You see your first question five minutes early.
Updated September 2026Hull York Medical School is one of the most transparent schools about its interview. For 2027 entry, home applicants interview in person at the Hull and York campuses and overseas applicants interview online; HYMS cannot offer online interviews to home applicants. The in-person MMI is scored out of 90. A group exercise of up to ten candidates, chaired by problem-based learning tutors, is worth 22 points and scores your participation and contribution, not your medical knowledge. Two mini interviews and a station run by senior medical students are worth 17 points each: two questions per station, two interviewers scoring independently, and you receive your first question before entering with five minutes' thinking time. An individual scenario station, also 17 points, shows you a pre-recorded video of a character speaking to you; you respond at two points and at the end, then answer follow-ups. HYMS says it wants to find out about your values, critical thinking, realistic understanding of medicine and how you work in a team, and that you will not be tested on medical knowledge.

- 1Applications are ranked for interview according to HYMS's selection procedure. For 2027 entry, home fee-status applicants interview in person at the University of Hull and University of York campuses; overseas fee-status applicants interview online. Online interviews are not available to home applicants.
- 2Group exercise (22 points): up to ten candidates in a problem-based learning style discussion, chaired by experienced PBL tutors, with a tutor and an observing medical student scoring each candidate on participation and contribution. Not scored on medical knowledge.
- 3Two mini interviews and a student station (17 points each): two questions per station, two interviewers scoring independently (senior HYMS students in the student station). You receive your first question before entering and get five minutes' thinking time. Themes: current medical and ethical issues, insight into a medical career and becoming a medical student, critical thinking and problem solving, personal qualities, and commitment to NHS core values.
- 4Individual scenario station (17 points): a pre-recorded video of a character talking directly to you, watched on over-ear headphones. You respond at two points during the video and once at the end, then answer follow-up questions. You are not asked to problem-solve or use medical knowledge.
- 5Online (overseas): three mini interviews and a student station at 15 points each (one question per station, two minutes' thinking time), the scenario station (15) and a group exercise of up to six candidates (15). Total still 90.
- 6What HYMS scores across the whole MMI: working collaboratively in a group; insight into a medical career; understanding of NHS Constitution values; motivation; awareness of current medical issues; communication; understanding of and motivation for the HYMS course; empathy, tolerance of ambiguity and resilience; critical thinking. Panels include health professionals, academics, senior medical students and lay people.
Interview questions
HYMS publishes its station structure, points and themes but not its questions. The practice questions below are Merra's, written to the themes HYMS lists for its question stations; they are not HYMS's own. Merra does not practise the group exercise or the video scenario.

How is the Hull York medicine MMI scored?
Out of 90 for in-person candidates: group exercise 22, two mini interviews 17 each, student station 17 and individual scenario station 17. Online candidates have a different split (15 points per station) with the same total.
Do I see the questions in advance at HYMS?
Partly. For the mini interviews and student station you receive your first question before entering and get five minutes' thinking time (two minutes online).
What is the HYMS group exercise?
A problem-based learning style discussion in a group of up to ten candidates (six online), chaired by PBL tutors, scored on participation and contribution rather than medical knowledge.
What is the video scenario station?
