Palantir Interview Questions & Process
Software Engineering · Product
Updated July 2026Palantir's engineering interviews are built around the competencies needed to solve ambiguous problems and work inside systems that already exist. The loop is personalised by role, and the Forward Deployed Software Engineer track in particular weights end-user reasoning, decomposition, rapid learning and communication as heavily as raw coding.
The path is a recruiter call, a technical screen run through CodePair, Karat or HackerRank that may mix algorithms, SQL and API work with embedded behavioural questions, then an onsite of three roughly hour-long rounds drawn from a pool, then a hiring manager interview. Because the onsite rounds are selected rather than fixed, two candidates for the same team can get different loops.
The round Palantir is known for is decomposition. You are given a vague real-world need and asked to turn it into a scoped solution: who the users are, what data exists, where the API boundaries sit, what you are assuming, what you are trading off and how you would iterate. There is no clean problem statement to optimise against, which is the point. A learning or re-engineering round works similarly, handing you unfamiliar documentation or code and watching you extend, debug or explain it live.
Two practical notes. Current candidate guidance reports that AI tools are not permitted during the loop, so confirm the policy with your recruiter and prepare to work unaided. And the process commonly runs about three to four weeks end to end.
The cost of walking in unprepared
Palantir's process spans 6 distinct stages, often compressed into a single high-pressure loop. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.

- 1Recruiter Call. A conversation about background, motivation, culture fit, preferred work, and why Palantir or the FDSE track.
- 2Technical Screen. Coding through CodePair, Karat, or HackerRank, sometimes combining algorithms, SQL, API work, and embedded behavioral questions.
- 3Onsite Pool. Three roughly 60-minute rounds are selected from decomposition, learning, coding, re-engineering, and system design, so loops vary by role.
- 4Decomposition Round. Candidates turn a vague real-world need into a scoped solution with users, data, APIs, assumptions, trade-offs, and an iteration plan.
- 5Learning / Re-engineering Round. Candidates absorb unfamiliar documentation or code, then extend, debug, or explain the system under observation.
- 6Hiring Manager Interview. A final round that reviews the onsite packet, revisits weaker signals, tests ownership and mission fit, and may include team matching.
