OpenAI Interview Questions & Process
Software Engineering · Product
Updated July 2026OpenAI hires engineers to build safe, beneficial AI systems, and it assesses two things at once: practical systems depth, and whether you have a real point of view on where AI is heading and where it could go wrong. That second thread starts in the recruiter screen and runs through the whole loop.
There is no single fixed sequence, since the shape varies by role, team and candidate. A common path is a recruiter screen, sometimes a timed HackerRank-style assessment for early-career candidates, then a technical screen that often runs two 60-minute rounds on the same day, one implementation-heavy coding interview and one system design. The onsite typically adds four to five rounds: substantial coding where you recreate or extend real system behaviour against layered edge cases, a system design hour focused on aggressive scale, fault tolerance, distributed coordination, idempotency and recovery, a technical deep dive where you present a project and defend what you personally decided and why, and a behavioural round.
Algorithms do appear, mostly in online assessments and early-career tracks, but the live rounds lean toward building real systems, language internals and production-quality correctness. The behavioural round is not a formality either. OpenAI's stated mission is that advanced AI benefits humanity, and its own careers materials emphasise humility and clear awareness of both upside and downside. Candidates commonly report about a month from first interview to final round.
The cost of walking in unprepared
OpenAI's process spans 7 distinct stages, often compressed into a single high-pressure loop. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.
Merra: run the OpenAI interview before it counts
Hope, Merra’s AI interviewer, runs a OpenAI-style mock out loud — the same question styles, real follow-ups — then scores you on the five dimensions real interviewers use, with a recording and transcript.

- 1Recruiter Screen. A brief conversation covering background, motivation for OpenAI, and the candidate's view of where AI is heading and where it could go wrong.
- 2Optional Online Assessment. Some early-career candidates complete a timed HackerRank-style coding assessment before live rounds.
- 3Technical Screen. Often two 60-minute rounds on the same day - one implementation-heavy coding interview and one system design interview.
- 4Virtual Onsite Coding. Candidates recreate or extend real system behavior, write substantial correct code, and respond to layered edge cases.
- 5System Design. A 60-minute discussion focused on aggressive scale, fault tolerance, distributed coordination, idempotency, and recovery.
- 6Technical Deep Dive. A project presentation where candidates defend what they personally built, why they made key decisions, and how the work would scale.
- 7Behavioral Interview. Mission, AI trajectory, conflict, collaboration, and cross-functional judgment are assessed against OpenAI's values and mission.
