H-1B Visa Interview / H-1B stamping walkthrough

H-1B stamping: what actually happens at the interview

Everyone interviews now, renewals included. Here is what the window actually looks like.

Updated August 2026

Stamping is the consular step that puts the visa in your passport, and since 2 September 2025 it includes an in-person interview for everyone: the renewal waivers are gone. The interview is short and focused: employer, role, work location, and, for consultancy cases, the client chain. This page walks the appointment end to end and carries the questions that decide it, first stamping and renewal both.

This is interview practice, not immigration or legal advice. Merra does not review your petition and does not predict whether your case will be approved or sent to 221(g) administrative processing.

FAQs

Do renewals still interview?

Yes, since 2 September 2025, everyone.

How long is the interview?

Minutes; the preparation is in the answers, not the queue.

What documents?

Passport, I-797, DS-160 confirmation, client letter for consultancy cases, degree evidence: officers may ask for none of them.

What fails a stamping?

Vendor-chain gaps and answers that contradict the petition.

Is stamping the same as the visa?

Stamping is the consular issuance step: petition approval alone does not board a plane.
