H-1B Visa Interview / 221(g) explainer

What a 221(g) actually means, and what happens next

A 221(g) is not a refusal. It is limbo, and the follow-up interview is winnable.

Updated August 2026

Section 221(g) is quoted on the slip handed to thousands of H-1B applicants whose cases go into administrative processing, and almost nobody understands it: it is not a denial, it means documents or verification are pending, typically on the client chain in consultancy cases. This page explains the process in plain language, what each request usually means, and how the follow-up interview works, drawn from the same bank our practice interviewer runs (Role 6 is exactly this follow-up).

This is interview practice, not immigration or legal advice. Merra does not review your petition and does not predict whether your case will be approved or sent to 221(g) administrative processing.

The interview process

  1. 1At the window, instead of approval you receive a 221(g) slip stating what is pending.
  2. 2You or your employer submit the requested documents.
  3. 3The case sits in administrative processing: weeks to months.
  4. 4Some cases are then approved directly; others are called to a follow-up interview focused on the flagged area.

FAQs

Is 221(g) a denial?

No: administrative processing; a refusal would cite a different section.

How long does it take?

Weeks to months; consultancy client-chain verification is the slowest path.

What do the slip colours mean?

Posts vary; the slip text controls, colour is secondary.

What triggers it?

Client-site and vendor-chain gaps above all; since December 2025, private social media profiles are also reported to trigger scrutiny.

Can I practise the follow-up?

Yes: it is a role in our H-1B interviewer.
