Updated September 2026Cambridge Philosophy had 5 applications per place in the 2025 cycle and accepted 42. Written work is only requested by Downing and St John's (two pieces); Jesus and Trinity set an admission assessment after shortlisting. Cambridge describes philosophy as the investigation of very general and fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, mind, morality, logic, language, reasoning, politics, art and value, requiring 'complex critical thinking, rigorous analysis and consideration of new perspectives', and notes that the analytic style of philosophy was developed here by Russell, Moore, Wittgenstein and Ramsey. Interviews are run by the college assessing you: main period 7 to 18 December 2026, online or in person depending on the college, most applicants having one or two interviews totalling 35 minutes to an hour with two or three interviewers. Cambridge says it assesses your understanding of the subject, readiness for high-level study, critical and independent thinking, curiosity and enthusiasm. Philosophy interviews typically present a puzzle or argument and follow your reasoning; prior study of philosophy is not required.

- 4Expect an argument or thought experiment to analyse, and to be pushed with counter-examples and distinctions. Prior philosophy is not assumed.

Do I need to have studied philosophy?
No. The interview tests critical thinking and analysis; the course itself starts with a grounding in analytic philosophy and its history.
