Goldman Sachs Interview Questions & Process

Investment Banking · Markets

Updated July 2026

Goldman Sachs is a leading global investment bank built on advisory, underwriting and asset management, and its recruiting is as early as it is selective. For summer analyst programmes the cycle opens more than a year before the placement starts: applications typically open across the Americas and EMEA around the middle of the year, HireVue invitations follow in the autumn, and Superdays run from roughly January. Goldman reviews on a rolling basis, so in practice the window closes well before the published deadline.

The funnel runs five stages: a resume screen weighted toward university, academic record, leadership and prior finance internships, a game-based cognitive and behavioural assessment, a recorded HireVue round, a technical phone interview with junior bankers, and the final round. Format differs by region. In North America the Superday is usually three to six back-to-back interviews of about 30 minutes with senior bankers. In EMEA and APAC the final stage is more often an assessment centre with group cases, a written-report exercise and deeper competency interviews.

What gets scored is not only the technicals. The HireVue is graded on STAR structure, clarity and presentation as much as content, and after the Superday the banker discussion weighs character, integrity and genuine enthusiasm alongside technical fluency. Relevant internships and internal networking generally count for more than post-graduate credentials such as the CFA.

The cost of walking in unprepared

Goldman Sachs's process spans 5 distinct stages, often compressed into a single high-pressure loop. Most candidates only find out they weren't ready once the result lands.

Goldman Sachs interview FAQs

What criteria do AI and human reviewers assess during the Goldman Sachs HireVue?

Reviewers focus on STAR structure, communication clarity, eye contact with the camera, limited filler words, professional presentation, and the substance of the candidate's technical or market argument.

How are technical finance skills and cultural fit weighted during the Superday?

Technical competence is a prerequisite, but the post-Superday banker huddle often places substantial weight on culture fit, character, integrity, and genuine enthusiasm.

Does a professional qualification such as the CFA provide a major advantage?

Relevant internships, university record, internal networking, and practical technical fluency are generally valued more highly than post-graduate credentials such as the CFA.
