The H4 visa interview: what the officer actually asks (2026)

Dropbox is gone. Spouses who never faced an officer now interview in person, and the questions are about your marriage, not your paperwork.

Updated August 2026

Until September 2025 most H4 applicants renewed by dropbox and never spoke to an officer. That has ended: interview waivers were withdrawn for nearly all nonimmigrant categories, so H4 spouses and dependents, including renewals, now attend in-person consular interviews. The interview is short, usually two to four minutes, and the officer’s real question is whether the marriage and the dependency are genuine: who your spouse is, what they do, where you will live, and what you will do in the US. This page covers the questions officers ask H4 applicants, how they differ from the H1B holder’s own interview, and the answers that go wrong.

The H4 interview process

  1. 1Documents passed through the window.
  2. 2Identity and relationship confirmation.
  3. 3Questions about the H1B spouse: employer, role, location, salary range.
  4. 4Questions about the marriage: how you met, wedding, time living together.
  5. 5Questions about your own plans in the US.
  6. 6Decision, or administrative processing (221g).

What changed in 2025

Interview waivers were withdrawn for nearly all nonimmigrant visa categories in September 2025. H4 applicants — including people renewing a visa they had held for years without ever facing an officer — now interview in person, the same as first-time applicants.

The three areas, and which one fails people

Officers ask about three things: the H1B spouse’s employment, the marriage, and your own plans in the US. The documented failure is vagueness about the spouse’s work — not knowing your spouse’s employer, role or city is the classic way an H4 interview goes wrong.

H4 vs the H1B holder’s interview

The H1B holder’s own interview is about defending their job offer and qualifications. The H4 applicant’s interview is about proving the relationship and dependency are genuine. Different burden, different questions — know your role going in.

If you get a 221(g)

A 221(g) generally means administrative processing — not a refusal — while your case needs further review before a decision. See the official source below for specifics.
